Becoming a Certified Scottish Game Angling Instructor http://www.sgaic.co.uk/ is not something that happens overnight. It is a journey of dedication, discipline, and an unwavering passion for the sport. For me, it has been a two-year commitment of structured training, continual revision, and real-world experience on the water—an experience that has not only refined my skills but reshaped my understanding of what it truly means to teach fly fishing at a professional level.

The Commitment Behind the Qualification

The pathway to certification demands far more than simply being a competent angler. It requires a deep understanding of casting mechanics, rivercraft, fish behaviour, safety, and—crucially—the ability to communicate and teach effectively. Over the past two years, I have immersed myself in every aspect of the discipline. From perfecting loop control and presentation casts to studying instructional techniques and client care, every detail has mattered.

There have been long days on the river in all conditions, hours of practice refining technique, and countless sessions revisiting theory. The process has pushed me to a higher standard—not just as an angler, but as a professional.

The Importance of Mentorship

A journey like this is rarely done alone, and I have been fortunate to have the guidance of an exceptional mentor, David Mateer.

His experience, knowledge, and patience have played a pivotal role in my development throughout the process. Through his platform, Dave Mateer Casting Tuition, http://www.castingtuition.co.uk/, he delivers a level of coaching that is both precise and deeply practical.

Having a mentor of his calibre has meant that every session is purposeful. Weaknesses are identified early, strengths are built upon, and nothing is left to chance. His approach to casting tuition, combined with a deep understanding of what examiners look for, has given me the structure and confidence needed to progress steadily.

More importantly, he has instilled the importance of professionalism, attention to detail, and the responsibility that comes with instructing others—qualities that go far beyond passing an assessment.

The Next Step – FFI Examinations

The journey now moves into its most important phase. I will be undertaking my Fly Fishers International (FFI) https://www.flyfishersinternational.org/ examinations on the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th of May.

During these dates, I will be assessed for both double-handed and single-handed casting certifications. These examinations represent the culmination of two years of preparation, practice, and commitment. They are widely recognised within the industry and set a high standard for casting instruction worldwide.

This stage is not just about demonstrating technical ability, but also about showcasing teaching competence, clarity of instruction, and the ability to adapt to different anglers—skills that are essential for any professional instructor.

The Challenges Along the Way

Balancing training with work and personal commitments has been one of the biggest challenges. There have been times when progress has felt slow, and moments where the level of precision required has seemed relentless—but those are the moments that shape you.

Fly casting at an instructional level is about consistency and repeatability. It’s not enough to perform a cast well once—you need to demonstrate it clearly, explain it simply, and adapt it to suit different learners. That level of mastery takes time, patience, and resilience.

The Reward

Reaching this stage is already an incredibly rewarding milestone. It represents not just technical ability, but a proven commitment to achieving a recognised standard of teaching, safety, and professionalism within game angling.

More than anything, it provides the foundation to pass on knowledge in a way that genuinely helps others enjoy and improve in the sport.

Looking Ahead

With the FFI examinations now on the horizon, the focus is sharper than ever. This is where everything comes together.

Regardless of the outcome, the journey itself has already been invaluable. But the goal remains clear—to achieve certification in both disciplines and continue developing as a professional instructor within Scottish game angling.

For anyone considering this path, my advice is simple: commit fully, trust the process, and seek out the best mentorship you can find. With the right guidance and determination, it is one of the most rewarding achievements you can pursue in fly fishing.
