As the fishing season draws to a close here in the Highlands, the rivers grow quiet. The bustle of early mornings, the hum of excitement from visiting anglers, and the rhythm of salmon and trout days give way to a stillness that only autumn and winter can bring. But while the water rests, I don’t.

Out of season isn’t a time to hang up the rods — it’s a time to refine, reset, and prepare. Every day, you’ll still find me with a fly rod in hand, out on the grass or by the riverbank, casting. Not for fish this time, but for something just as meaningful: precision, consistency, and growth.

This winter, I’m fully committed to pushing my own skills further than ever before. I’m training daily as I work toward achieving my FFI (Fly Fishers International) and SGAIC (Scottish Game Angling Instructors Certificate) qualifications. These aren’t just pieces of paper to me — they’re a reflection of a lifelong passion for fly fishing, and a commitment to passing that knowledge on to others at the highest possible standard.

Fly casting is an art form. Every loop tells a story, every line delivered with clean energy and control. And just like any craft, mastery comes through practice. Cold mornings or not, I’ll be out there, rod in hand, chasing that perfect loop.

While the season sleeps, I’m sharpening the tools to make the next one even better — not just for myself, but for every guest who steps into the river with me.

So, if you happen to drive past a field and see someone casting into the frosty air with no water in sight… that’s probably me. The season might be over, but the passion never stops.

Tight lines — even in winter.
