The 2026 brown trout fishing season in Scotland has started in spectacular fashion, with some of the best fly fishing conditions we have experienced in recent years. Across the Scottish Highlands, anglers have enjoyed exceptional sport thanks to prolific March Brown and Mayfly hatches, favourable weather conditions, and healthy populations of wild brown trout.

At You Fish Scotland, our guided fly fishing trips have produced memorable days on both lochs and rivers, with countless rising fish, stunning scenery, and several encounters with truly specimen-sized Highland brown trout.

Incredible Mayfly and March Brown Hatches Across the Highlands

One of the standout features of the 2026 season has been the abundance of aquatic insect life. The early spring March Brown hatches were among the strongest we have seen for years, providing consistent opportunities for dry fly fishing and exciting surface action.

As spring progressed, the famous Mayfly hatch arrived in force, bringing wild brown trout to the surface throughout the day. These hatches created ideal conditions for anglers targeting rising trout on dry flies, with fish feeding confidently and often aggressively.

For fly fishing enthusiasts, few experiences compare to watching a Highland brown trout confidently sip a dry fly from the surface during a major hatch.

A Wildlife Spectacle on Every Fishing Trip

The exceptional insect activity has attracted more than just trout. Throughout the season, swifts and swallows have been feeding heavily over the water, taking advantage of the huge numbers of emerging insects.

Watching these birds perform their aerial displays while trout rise beneath them has been a highlight for many anglers visiting the Scottish Highlands. It’s a reminder that fly fishing in Scotland is about far more than simply catching fish—it’s about experiencing nature at its finest.

Big Trout, Broken Hearts and Unforgettable Memories

While plenty of beautiful wild brown trout have been landed this season, several truly large fish have managed to escape after hard-fought battles.

A number of specimen trout were hooked during guided sessions, only to throw the hook or find sanctuary in weed beds and underwater structure. While losing a big fish is never easy, these encounters provide clear evidence that some exceptional trout are thriving within our Highland waters.

For many anglers, the fish that gets away often becomes the one they remember most.

The Best Flies for Brown Trout in Scotland So Far This Season

When anglers ask what has been the most effective fly pattern this year, one fly stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Elk Hair Caddis – Size 18

The standout fly of the season has undoubtedly been the Elk Hair Caddis in size 18. Despite larger insects being present on the water, this simple and highly effective dry fly has consistently fooled feeding trout across a wide range of conditions.

Its ability to imitate multiple adult insects and remain highly visible on the surface has made it a favourite pattern throughout spring.

Top Nymph Patterns

When trout have been feeding subsurface, nymphing techniques have continued to produce excellent results.

The most successful patterns have been:

  • Pheasant Tail Nymph
  • Copper John Nymph
  • Flashback Pheasant Tail
  • Small weighted mayfly nymph patterns

These flies have accounted for numerous fish when dry fly action slowed or trout moved deeper during changing weather conditions.

Fly Rod Setups That Have Produced Results

Two rod setups have stood out throughout the season and have become regular choices during guided fly fishing trips.

LOOP 10ft 3-Weight

The LOOP 10ft 3-weight has been the perfect rod for delicate dry fly presentations and technical nymphing. Its sensitivity and finesse make it ideal for targeting wild brown trout feeding in clear Highland waters.

LOOP 7X 6-Weight

The LOOP 7X 6-weight has proven invaluable when facing stronger winds, fishing larger lochs, or targeting bigger trout. The additional power provides excellent line control while still offering the finesse required for accurate fly presentation.

Together, these two setups have covered virtually every situation encountered during the season so far.

Weather Conditions Favouring Brown Trout Fishing

The weather throughout spring has generally been favourable, with a good balance of mild temperatures, manageable winds, and stable water conditions.

These conditions have encouraged strong hatches, active trout feeding behaviour, and excellent opportunities for both dry fly and nymph fishing. Consistent water temperatures have also contributed to healthy trout activity across many Highland fisheries.

Looking Ahead to Summer 2026

If the first part of the season is any indication, 2026 could become one of the most memorable brown trout fishing seasons in recent years.

With healthy trout populations, abundant insect life, and exciting fishing already being experienced across the Highlands, there is every reason to be optimistic about the months ahead.

Whether you are an experienced fly angler looking for technical dry fly fishing or someone wanting to experience Scotland’s famous wild brown trout for the first time, the opportunities have rarely looked better.
