Night Sea Trout Fishing on the River Spey

Guided Sea Trout Fishing in Scotland

Experience the excitement and atmosphere of night sea trout fishing on the River Spey with You Fish Scotland.

As daylight fades and the river comes alive, sea trout begin to move through the pools and runs. Fishing after dark is a completely different experience from daytime angling — one that combines careful observation, river knowledge, technique and anticipation.

Our guided night sea trout fishing trips on the River Spey are available from May through September, offering anglers the opportunity to experience one of Scotland’s most exciting forms of fly fishing.

A Specialist Night-Time Fishing Experience

Sea trout fishing at night requires a different approach. Reading the river, understanding water conditions, controlling your fly and presenting it effectively are all important when visibility is limited.

Your guide will provide instruction and advice throughout the session, helping you understand the techniques used for night-time sea trout and adapting the fishing to the prevailing river conditions.

Fishing can take place from approximately 9pm until midnight for a half day, or 9pm until 3am for a full night, depending on the time of year and available daylight.

FAQ’s

Q: When and where is the best time to fish for sea trout in Scotland?

A: The best time to fish for migratory sea trout in Scotland is from May through September. You Fish Scotland specializes in guided trips on the River Spey, targeting these returning brown trout at night when darkness encourages them to actively move and feed.

Q: What time does night sea trout fishing start on the River Spey?

A: You Fish Scotland’s guided night sea trout sessions begin at 9:00 PM. Anglers can choose a half-night session ending at midnight, or a full six-hour night session finishing at 3:00 AM, depending on river conditions and personal preference.

Q: Do I need experience or Spey casting skills to fish for sea trout at night?

A: No previous night fishing or Spey casting experience is required. Your guide, Wes Grant-Parke (a qualified SGAIC and FFI instructor), provides comprehensive safety briefings for night wading and teaches the specific single or double-handed casting techniques needed for low-visibility river conditions.

Q: What equipment and clothing do I need for night sea trout fishing in Scotland?

A: You Fish Scotland provides all specialized night fishing tackle, including appropriate fly rods and traditional dark wet flies. Anglers only need to wear warm, waterproof layers, as Scottish summer nights on the River Spey can drop in temperature significantly after dark.

Q: Can I combine sea trout night fishing with Atlantic salmon daytime fishing?

A: Yes. Depending on the specific River Spey beat and permit availability during the May to September season, You Fish Scotland can arrange bespoke private itineraries that combine daytime Atlantic salmon fishing with exciting night-time sea trout sessions.
